Under our measured term contract (MTC) with Queen Mary University of London, Beardwell was asked to refurbish the kitchens, bathrooms and corridors of the Maynard and Varey accommodation blocks over the summer vacation – ready for students moving in at the start of term.

Our Approach

We stripped out the existing bathrooms and kitchens, altered walls and services within each flat, then fitted everything out to a new standard. Work progressed flat by flat using both entrances to the building, helping to keep the works moving and the programme on track. Cost planning provided early in the process helped the university to plan its budget and prioritise the scope.

The Challenge

Storage and access on a busy campus were tight throughout. As the works opened up, the condition of existing pipework threw up problems that needed solving on the move. The finish date was fixed – students needed to move in for the new term – and the final week required a significant push from the whole team to get there.
