How we work

Carbon Reduction

At Beardwell Construction, we are committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2045 – five years earlier than the government’s national target.

We believe that sustainable working is not only essential for our business’s growth, but is also a key part of our responsibility to the planet.

Why Net Zero?

Climate change is currently having a dramatic effect on the planet. Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are pushing up average global temperatures, resulting in major environmental damage and threatening food security for millions. To safeguard future generations, we all have an obligation to tackle this problem.

To do this, humanity needs to adopt a Net Zero approach to its activities. This means making sure that the total amount of GHGs we emit is equal or less than the amount we remove from the environment. If we could do this, global temperature would stabilise for the future.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

To help us achieve our Net Zero goal by 2045, we have developed a detailed Carbon Reduction Plan. We have produced this in accordance with PPN 06/21 and using UK Government guidance.

While CO2 is the most well-known greenhouse gas, it’s important for us to reduce emissions of others. These are often measured in carbon dioxide equivalent units (CO2e).

Some of the measures we’ve taken to reduce our carbon footprint include:

  • Installing solar PV panels and energy-efficient LED lighting in our offices, cutting emissions by 50%.
  • Providing training and guidance to staff to help them make more sustainable choices both at work and at home.
  • Continuously reviewing our operations, supply chain and site practices to identify further opportunities for carbon reduction.
  • Working on projects with an increasingly low environmental impact, including constructing school buildings that are Net Zero in operation.

Despite growing significantly since 2019, we have reduced our emissions by 19%. This equates to somewhere in the region of three average UK households’ annual emissions. We predict that by 2030 our overall reduction will be 30%.
